No, I don’t have a formal PhD. (Barely earned my high-school diploma.) But flipping through my journals from the past 17 years, I noticed a lot of Pretty helpful Discoveries, many I was blind to when they first occurred. Divorce triggered my journey to learn new stuff about myself. And I picked up a lot by staying open to new experiences — from above, below, strange folk, cool shrinks, crafty demons, surreal events, ER visits and way more. “Daadeee! Daadeee!” I heard my 9-year-old daughter shrieking.
I ran outside to see her taking big courageous steps up the hill from our backyard, sobbing, sniffling, desperately trying to catch her breath to tell me what had happened.
“We were ple-ple-playing and Eric dra-dropped a big rock on my foot. It hurts, Daddy. It really hurts.”
I took off her running shoe, peeled back her sock and saw the reason why. Her right big toe was throbbing red and the nail was already starting to turn black and blue.
