My Real Resume: 40 Years of Jobs I Hope Will Shape My Next 40.

As many of us wonder what kind of world and workplace we’ll return to when the bug breaks, I thought a glance backward would help me create a more fulfilling future — one based on life-changing lessons and forgotten passions gleaned from a range of rugged, on-the-job learnings — the breadcrumbs I’ve left for my future self.

Resume experts say you should include about only 15 years of work history. That’s no fun. I did way more colorful stuff early in my work career. I think all of it should be revealed.

Our real resumes hold the secrets to our real selves: we just have to look closely.

Here goes. Here’s My Real Resume starting at about age 16 when I first hit the workforce in Mississauga, Ontario…

Waiter at Pietro’s Pizza Parlor

Gone are the days of simultaneously serving pizzas, pouring wine for customers (and for yourself), and asking them to lift their feet as you wipe the floorboards under their table. Too bad. Talk about a lesson in extreme multi-tasking.

Dishwasher at The Boathouse Restaurant

This was a short stint. As important as this job is, I accepted I’m not good at scraping…
