Need to ditch the public to increase your writing productivity? Go to a public library.

They’re shutting down now. But even before the COVID crisis, attendance was sparse. Perfect for a writer banging out stories cheered on by the creative spirit of published authors on the edge of their shelves rooting for you. How can you not push past your productivity goal line with rabid fans like that?

It’s not just that sublime roar of writing encouragement I thrive on. During the last decade or so, millions of government modernization dollars and private donations have surged into libraries to help them keep pace with our digital revolution. The workspaces are sweet. The views are stunning. The resources are awesome. The price to linger ’til they kick you out at closing time? You know it: zip. (Shhh. To keep my out-of-pockets down, I do pack pretzels, beef sticks and a few beers once in a while.)

Truth is, I don’t like talking about my favorite libraries.

What can I say? I don’t want them to get crowded. Public usage is actually on the rise which concerns me. But since I’ve written 40k-ish words in them the last two weeks (three Medium articles plus a chunk of my novel I’ll self-publish…
